Tips For Watering Home Gardens

As food prices climb higher and organic foods rise in popularity, many homeowners are starting their own home gardens. Of course, supplementing the food supply is not the only reason to maintain a garden. Some nurture a relaxing green getaway in their own backyard by growing fragrant flowers and privacy bushes. No matter what kinds of flora you keep in your garden, it is necessary to allow plants to get plenty of sunlight and water.

Even the savviest gardener cannot control the sun, but the true green thumb knows how to encourage growth through prudent pruning, proper fertilization, and customized watering. The best rate and amount of water to give certain plants often stumps those who are trying to garden for the first time. Finicky species of plants can be just as put off by too much water as they are by dry conditions.

If you find yourself in a dampening dilemma, take a look at these common watering tips:

* Research your plants. Just like people, pets, and snowflakes, every plant is different. Depending on where they are found in nature, some may need monsoons while others can go weeks without moisture. Beginning gardeners should try to pick local plants for their first effort, because they are likely to thrive with only natural rainfall levels.

Books, landscapers and nursery owners are all good sources of information about how to care for certain plants. If you are still confused after seeking instruction, set up a simple experiment. Try watering different plants of the same type with the same amount of light at different intervals. Within a few weeks, it should be clear which method produces the desired results. Reliable information is certainly attainable with the proper amount of research, ask around or do your own searches to find the answers you are looking for.

* Water in the late evening or early morning. It may seem as though the middle of the afternoon is the perfect time to spend time in the garden tending to the plants, but it is best to leave the patch alone during the day. Plants are working hard in the heat to produce food from the sunlight and store it.

Though it does not hurt or "boil" the plant to water when the sun is at its strongest, the heat and wind cause loss of water and evaporation. This means that less of the moisture actually makes it to the plant. Waiting until the evening or working early in the morning allows the water to soak into the soil. Actually, morning watering is even more preferable because the sun will dry the crust of the dirt and keep the soil around the roots damp for most of the day.

* Use the right food. If you decide to add a fertilizer or any other additive to the water, make sure that the product is appropriate for the particular variety of plant. This is especially important for vegetable and herb gardens because certain chemicals can leave harmful substances on the food. The product should have plant recommendations and directions for use clearly listed on the packaging.

* Plan irrigation systems carefully. A professional landscaper can create a pleasing green area and advise the homeowner on proper watering techniques, but often they also design irrigation systems. These systems do not always need to be professionally installed, but they do need to be properly planned in order to ensure that all of the plants receive the correct amount of moisture.

Many systems use sprinklers and drip hoses that dampen the soil around the flora on a regular basis. Some can even be set to deliver more liquid to certain areas or change watering frequency automatically at different times of year. These setups also tend to conserve more water than hand watering.

* Be consistent. If you opt not to install an automatic irrigation system, make sure to stick to a regular watering schedule. Light, frequent showers encourage strong root systems that are less susceptible to drought. Giving the plant lots of water once a week may produce the same green, healthy appearance, but it will be less likely to bounce back after a dry spell or pruning.

Though watering is essential to the success of your garden, there are a number of other tasks at hand for the home gardener. Nurturing vegetables and flowers from seeds often takes months of hard work, but even planting mature plants can be a challenge. Proper preparation of soil, weeding, pruning, and fertilization are mandatory for a lush, lovely garden.

However, by observing these watering tips, you can get one step closer to growing your dream garden. After all, your plants depend on water to grow into herbs, vegetable, and flowers. Only you can provide them with this live-giving substance.

How Summer Humidity Can Affect Wood Floors

Owners of wood floors are often surprised to find cracks and bows in their pristine flooring throughout the year. These small cosmetic concerns are common to all types of commercial flooring and are no reason to panic. During the spring and summer, the air inside a house is much more humid than during the winter. The lumber used for flooring absorbs liquid in the air and enlarges.

All wood floor systems are designed to withstand a certain amount of moisture. In most cases, plenty of space is left during installation between planks in order to allow the material to expand. Even engineered and composite wood floors go through the same changes as solid wood, but often include special channels that allow the material to grow. These measures are designed to prevent problems caused by too much moisture, but the appearance and integrity of the floor can still be affected by high humidity.

Crowning

Crowning is the bowing of a wood floor slat into a convex shape. The center of the board appears to be higher than the edges and makes the floor uneven and unattractive. There are a number of causes for crowning, but it is often the result of botched attempts to fix other moisture problems. Standing water on flooring triggers the most drastic crowning.

This problem can occur spontaneously in larger planks and center cuts of timber. Naturally occurring crowning is much less severe than the kind caused by human error and can only be seen upon close inspection. This kind of crowning is often the result of a humid environment, but should go away once the wood is allowed to dry out. In the meantime, floors with beveled edges will hide some of the distortion.

Cupping

Cupping is a condition in which planks become concave. The pieces of wood begin to resemble shallow cups as the sides rise above the center on the slat. There are a number of reasons severe cupping can occur in a floor, but moisture is always to blame for the change in the wood. Water spills that were allowed to soak into the wood are sometimes the problem, but high humidity is often the culprit. This condition is the result of the bottom of the floor containing more moisture than the top. Leaks in the subfloor and improper drying are usually the cause of these variations in dampness.

The treated surface of the wood resists expanding, but the seams and underside of the planks swell. As each piece grows, the planks can begin to push against one another. This pressure can exacerbate the cupping by forcing the edges to rise even more and cracks the wood.

Buckling

Buckling is a serious flooring issue in which the wood detaches from the subfloor. This problem should never be caused by normal changes in humidity. If a floor does react in this way to more moisture in the air, it was probably installed incorrectly. Buckling is seen most often in homes that have been flooded.

Controlling Moisture and Fixing Floors

Most homeowners will have no problem with their floors. Most modern flooring has been treated and designed to withstand even the most drastic atmospheric changes. If these products are installed properly, the planks should have enough room to grow without any problems.

However, owners of wood floors should keep their home well ventilated in the summer so that moistures can flow freely out of the house. Homes in particularly balmy climates may need the help of a dehumidifier. Cracks happen most in the winter, and although they are often only temporary, it may be wise to introduce some moisture into the air inside via a humidifier. This can help the family avoid colds and soar throats, too.

Never leave standing water on a floor. After a spill, sop up the liquid as quickly as possible. If necessary, use fans to thoroughly dry the wood. Of course, it is never a good idea to mop floors or clean them with water-based products.

If a floor has been damaged, look for leaks and other more significant sources of moisture. Humidity does not often cause permanent cosmetic defects, so check for other common problems first.

A damaged floor may need sanding, refinishing, or other repairs. Since the floor must be dried before any work can be done, try letting it air out for a while before calling a handyman. Many humidity problems are only temporary, so watch the area for a few days. If the wood does need work, make sure to allow the moisture to escape before refinishing it. Trapping extra water inside is likely to cause crowning.

How The Shark Steam Mop Can Keep Your Floors Clean

Forget about having to buy one mop for the kitchen floor and another for cleaning the beautiful treated wood floors throughout the rest of your home. The Shark Steam Mop is safe for use on most types of flooring, except unsealed wood and no-wax floors.

Say goodbye to the backbreaking work required by most other mops when trying to get your floors clean with them. Even with all of that work, how clean do those mops really get your floors? It may be disturbing to learn that actually most mops make your floors dirtier, but it is true. In addition, cleaning solutions for floors can make you and your family sick, and harm the environment.

We are all familiar with how the typical mop works. You dip it in a bucket of hot water that also contains a cleaning solution, scrub a small area of the floor, and then rinse the mop in the water bucket and continue repeating this process until the whole floor area has been gone over with the mop. However, if you think about, the water in the bucket is only "clean" until that first rinsing of a dirty mop. After that first scrubbing you are essentially using dirty water on the rest of the floor. Your floor may appear to be clean afterwards, but really, you have returned the germs and bacteria picked up by the mop, back onto the floor. In addition, you are leaving a residue by-product of the cleaning solution on the floor. This residue can become airborne particles that when inhaled, can make you and your family sick. This is not the kind of "clean" most people want, and especially when working up a sweat mopping the floors in order to get them clean and fresh.

The Shark Steam Mop uses the cleansing power of steam and can help you keep your floors clean without the use of harmful cleaning solutions. Water is the only ingredient needed to give this cleaning wizard the "steam" it needs to get the job done. Your powerful steam mop uses water from your faucet or alternatively, you may choose to use distilled water. The Shark Steam Mop heats the water to a very high temperature to produce steam and the steam is powerful enough to loosen even ground in dirt and grime, and remove it from your floors simply and without much effort on your part.

Unlike with other mops, and mop buckets, the dirt, and grime, along with any germs and bacteria that survived the high temperature of the steam, is passed to a tank that is separate from the "clean" water reservoir. The dirt stays in this separate compartment until you are ready to remove the tank and dispose of the dirty water and other contents it contains. This means that you will always be using "clean" water to produce the steam needed to get your floors cleaner than they have ever been before.

The Shark Steam Mop easily removes even the most stubborn of dirt without putting a strain on your back or knees. It also reaches into crevices that most other mops miss. The Shark mop lifts even more dirt for removal from the floors throughout your home, for an efficient and thorough clean.

Preparing your Shark Steam Mop for use is simple. Detaching the "dirty" tank for quick disposal of its contents, and reattaching to your Shark Steam Mop is easy as well. What about the maintenance requirements for your steam mop? All you have to do to keep your Shark Steam Mop in good working order is clean the steam mop body with a damp cloth and then a simple rinse of the removable tank.

With the help of the powerful Shark Steam Mop you can keep your floors clean and keep them free of the germs and bacteria that can make you and your family sick, Clean all of the flooring in your home thoroughly and without straining yourself. You will feel good knowing that the floors in your home are truly clean. Your friends will ask how you do it. When they do, tell them about the convenience and cleaning power of the Shark Steam Mop. They too can have truly clean floors in their homes. The makers of the Shark Steam Mop are confident that you will be satisfied with the power of this steam mop for getting all your floors truly clean.

For your added convenience, the Shark Steam Mop is available for purchase online through a variety of suppliers. You can also find many useful reviews about this product online that may help you to decide to try this ‘steam floor cleaning wizard’ for the floors in your home.

Tub Styles to Choose From for Your Bathroom Remodel

If you are remodeling your bathroom, more than likely you are looking for the perfect tub to complete your bathroom. You have many different options out there that you can choose from. Whether you just need something on the basic side or you want the ultimate bath time experience, you are sure to find the perfect tub to complete your bathroom. You have many factors to consider when you are trying to pick out the perfect tub. You need to think about the cost, the space you have in the bathroom, and of course the function that you expect the tub to perform. So, here are a few of the different tub styles that you can pick from when you're remodeling your bathroom.

A Standard Tub
First of all, if you just want something simple for your bathroom, then you may want to consider going with the standard tub for the bathroom. Standard tubs tend to be the cheapest and the most cost friendly if you are just looking for a simple tub that won't cost you a lot of money. They are attached to the wall and are on the floor, and you have many different colors that you can choose from too. So, while they are simple, they will go with about any type of bathroom décor.

A Claw Foot Tub
Claw foot tubs are very beautiful and they are a great addition to many bathrooms. If you love this design, then you may want to add one to your bathroom. They are very curvaceous and they provide you with a curvy and comfortable bath, because the curves of the tub fit your body really nicely. They are also soft, allowing you to have a comfortable bath time experience. If you need to repair them, this is quite easy too, since the pipes are totally exposed.

Tubs with Jets
Tubs with jets are a popular choice of tub today. This is for people who want a little more out of their tub. There are two types of jets that you can pick from if you decide to go with a jetted tub. You can go with air jets, which are more expensive, or you can choose to go with water jets. The water jets have more pressure, but the air jets are often the better option for those who love using bubble baths and bath oils.

Tubs for Two People
If you're looking for a way to have two people in the tub, then a tub for two people is an excellent idea. This is great for a romantic bath, but they do take up a lot of hot water. When you are considering this type of tub, you need to check your water heater to see if you actually have one big enough to heat enough water for this type of tub. If you don't you may be able to get a small heater that heats only the tub, to help out with this.

Choosing European Frameless Cabinets over North America Face Frame Cabinets

Consumers, when buying quality cabinets, always wonder whether to choose European frameless cabinets or the North America face frame quality cabinets for kitchen at home. Well, to help you out there is not much difference to say, whether you choose the frameless or the face frame kitchen cabinets for sale. Let me tell you some points of each kitchen cabinets design.

Comparative Cost & Quality. The cost of a NA face frame cabinet is more expensive than the expense for Euro frameless cabinets; this is because frameless cabinets are easier to build than a face frame style. Nevertheless, the quality of materials used for both cabinets are at par with each other.

A Matter of Space. Euro frameless styles offer a fresher and more modern impression since they cover lesser space between doors from cabinet to cabinet. NA face frames are more of the conventional look with more wood exposure, basically keeping up with its traditions and style.

Easy Install is not always Easy Clean. For some consumers, installation and cleaning of cabinets assist them in choosing the cabinet style. When it comes to easy installation, NA face frames are the deal to look out for because of its stiff front frames and lowered end panels; but the cleaning is harder because of the frames. Euro frameless cabinets are much easier to maintain with just dusting or wiping the interiors.

Both the frameless and face frame cabinets are applicable to bathroom, kitchen, laundry, utility, or sometimes, may also be well mixed. This happens when the consumer makes use of frameless quality cabinets for kitchen and a face frame quality cabinet for the bathroom.

So, how do you choose? Actually, it really depends on your tastes and home styles. And just like the traditions of different regions in the world, cabinet making have been based on the various regional styles of the manufacturers. Most consumers from the Midwest buy the face frame designs; consumers from the Coast opt for the frameless style.

European frameless cabinets started to become a more common and rampant item in the United States only during the early 1980s. Since then, consumers and other manufacturers begin to look into the benefits of a frameless design for cabinets. For more than 20 years now, the frameless cabinet industry has been developing and enhancing its product design and durability, even Asian countries have now been more open and adaptable to the idea of frameless cabinet construction. According to most manufacturers, the sudden growth and acceptance of frameless styles have also been largely due to the fact that they desire to establish more effective and efficient manufacturing standards to follow for all kinds, commercial, home, or kitchen furnishings.

As a consumer, the preference of home furnishings should be based on many things - your home style, the usage and efficiency in your household chores, the sturdiness of the product, the cost, and your personal style as well. So, whatever it is that you think may suit your home should make your life be comfortably lived.

Ready-to-Assemble Kitchen Cabinet is a Woman's Bestfriend

Most women love great kitchens. A part of them truly rests in the soul of the kitchen. Aside from the workplace, this is the section of the house where they become at peace with themselves and show creativity and expression through food preparations. Did you know that you can reward your partner, girlfriend, or wife with her favorite kitchen cabinet at an affordable price?
These are what you call ready-to-assemble kitchen cabinets; and they are the newest kits to die for. They are sold online by many manufacturers, changing the traditional trend of consumers to buy furnishings in a retail outlet. Those days are almost gone now. RTA cabinets online are the hot deals in town.
What makes these ready-to-assemble kitchen cabinets so special and different when sold online?
First, they are inexpensive kitchen cabinets - inexpensive enough that when ordering it online you can even save up to a 100% against custom-made cabinets! They are rather affordable, not because of its low quality, but because these online manufacturers made use of modularized and standardized parts or fillers that are so flexible to fit into bathrooms and kitchens in any size or shape.
Second, the designs of kitchen cabinets online vary a lot. Manufacturers have extended their efforts in creating an assortment of designs for these cabinets. Unlike kitchen cabinets at retail stores where you have to walk your way to each design, the web posting makes it easier for consumers to choose the kitchen cabinet that matches personal taste.
Another good thing about online designs is that they offer a 3D design service that helps you visualize the look of your kitchen even better. The service cost is at a low price of $50 and with 2 revisions available for you to completely nail down the design that you want for your home. Be aware though that in deciding the style that you want, consider the significance of cabinet doors. Be more specific. Would you like a contemporary clean Shaker style or the conventional full overlay raised panel?
Take for example the price and design of Walnut Wall Cabinet with 2 doors and 42" High for only $172.28, a Walnut Base Standard Cabinet with 34.5" High and 24" Deep at for only $83.79, and a Maple Shaker Sink Base Cabinet for only $197.93.
The best thing about kitchen cabinets being traded online is they are all wood kitchen cabinets from maple, to walnut, to an oak, and to cherry wood. You can be assured that kitchen cabinets online are purely made from the finest quality of solid wood to build up a strong foundation for your cabinets. Having RTA wood kitchen cabinets gives you better stability, prolonged strength, reliability, and durability to keep your kitchen things in place. So, there is no worry that you may have to replace them after a short while.
Actually, the times have changed and even men love great kitchens now. Sometimes they become even more meticulous when it comes to having the great utensils, house wares, and kitchen place to work with. So, if you have the same passion with your partner, why not add more fun and adventure in your life by buying durable but inexpensive kitchen cabinets online.

Environmentalists Love Bamboo Shades

We can all talk about global warming and the perils that we all face in the environment, but if we do not act first at home, then all we are doing is talking. Yes, we do need to drive less, cutting the fuel we use. If we drive slower, we will also cut down our fuel usage. However, these are the most simple and obvious of the changes that we can make, and so many people can make more simple change at home, and that will have a bigger impact than any other changes we can make. Our homes consume a lot of energy. If we can limit this, then we can cut down our impact. Many of the changes that can help may be made easily with bamboo shades. While many window treatments can provide some of these benefits, and plastic simulated woven woods may provide some, only real bamboo shades made from the natural woods, can really provide all these great benefits, and they can still remain affordable.

Bamboo shades can help us cut the light that enters, giving us lower cooling bills. Many people cool their homes during the summer months using electrical systems. The light managing and heat managing benefits of bamboo shades blocking the sunlight are innumerable. Bamboo shades can block as much as one hundred percent of the light, and basic open shades can block from twenty five percent to over ninety percent of the light. This is an approximation of the amount of heat that can be kept out, and with the blocking of heat, we are also reducing the need to cool our spaces. All by using woven wood shades. The benefits of keeping the light and heat out has the extra benefit of reducing the wear and tear on your furnishings.

When arriving at home to change one's clothing, most people will lower the blinds or shades in order to not reveal themselves to the world. The next step would be to turn on the lights, thus using electricity. However, many bamboo shades can give us privacy with retained daylight, so we do not have to use artificial lights. Using unlined bamboo shades, there will still be enough natural daylight to enter the window and thus home occupants can use the bamboo shades to have privacy and to only filter the light and thus, save energy.

When considering the increased use of bamboo shades, one should ponder whether it might be a wise choice to be growing and milling bamboo for bamboo shades. As it turns out, bamboo shades are among the most environmentally friendly window treatments one could buy. There are usually no, or limited plastic parts, in the finished shade. Glues are usually silicone based, and there is not a huge electrical need in shade manufacturing. Going back to the fields, where the bamboo is grown, because bamboo is such a hearty tree, which grows very fast, there is very little need for fertilizers to be applied or for pesticides to be applied. The factories for the manufacture of the fabric are often low impact, as well, using human labor for assembly often in the place of energy intensive machinery. Bamboo shades are highly sensitive, and not only look natural, but they also are great choices for the environment.

Finally, one should consider the bamboo shades when they are to be replaced. These materials are almost completely biodegradable. With the exception of the metal and plastic parts, which are very small, the bamboo and threads in the shades will disintegrate relatively quickly, so one can rest assured that the disposed shades will not simply pile up in a heap. Rather, bamboo shades will eventually revert to an environmentally useful changing element. Instead of a pile of plastic from the cheap shades, real bamboo shades can help the planet.

In the end, window treatments can be part of a general strategy to improve our home environments. Bamboo shades may be particularly helpful. Woven wood shades can filter the light and still provide privacy. Bamboo shades are easily recycled. Bamboo shades are excellent at providing light control so cooling bills may be controlled. In general, it can be a great environmental decision to use bamboo shades.

Is It Feasible To Update Fabric Vertical Blinds

Vertical blinds are exactly what their name implies, a blind that is designed as a vertical product and somehow functions in this manner. Vertical blinds should perform as designed, in other words, they should traverse from side to side, rotate open and close and look as pleasing as they did when they were new when the vanes, either fabric or pvc, were shiny and clean and the components function properly in order to provide all the benefits they were designed to do. And one more thing of great importance - has the vertical blind remained properly installed? A vertical blind that is not properly installed will not operate at its full capacity.

If your vertical blind does not meet all of the aforementioned factors, then it can be said your vertical blind is suffering from what is commonly known as “wear and tear”. This situation is a common part of the life of any product and can easily be corrected. However, this situation can be postponed longer into the future if the issue of quality is taken into consideration when making the original purchase. Quality vertical blinds may have hidden features that the average consumer would not realize and also higher quality vertical blinds may be easier to maintain and repair. These facts will not only prolong the life span of the vertical blind but will continually give the user pleasure.

Vertical blinds can be fabricated using fabric vanes and in this case the consumer should inquire about the wash ability of the fabric. Higher quality vertical blind fabric vanes are washable and thus can be kept looking clean over longer periods of time. Normally, vertical blind fabric vanes are not machine washable but the fabric can be spot cleaned by hand using a mild detergent and then having the area dabbed dry with a clean rag. The manufacturer of the fabric should always be consulted when the need arises. Careful consideration should be given to the proper and recommended cleaning instructions before proceeding.

Due to the vertical design of the product itself and the lack of horizontal surfaces where dust can accumulate, most vertical blinds can be maintained looking “fresh” by simply dusting often. Static electricity oftentimes contributes to the adherence of dust to the vertical blind vanes and in this case the use of an antistatic cloth is recommended. This action will reduce or eliminate most of the static in the future and thus lowering the maintenance required.

Vertical blind vanes made of PVC have gained popularity over the years and if this is the case, PVC vanes can be easily removed from the vertical blind track and washed with detergent either in your bathtub or in the yard using a water hose. Be fully sure that your blinds are fully dry before reinstalling onto the track to avoid unsightly water spots. Be extra careful whenever removing and reinstalling the vanes that the track carriers are not damaged as this may cause you to have the track repaired and result in a necessary monetary expense.

Should one or more of your PVC slats be broken or missing this is a sign that your vertical blind is suffering from “wear and tear” and replacement of the complete blind should be considered. This is not only a sign of wear and tear but also could be a display of age of the blind.

The mechanical function of all the components of the vertical blind is critical to the operation of the product and they should be tested and periodically maintained. This would simply require the pulling of the cord to insure the blind is smoothly traversing and the chain to check on the rotation of the louvers. If the louvers do not properly align when rotated you may simply need to pull the chain to a limit point and then exercise a greater than normal pulling force to bring the misaligned carrier(s) into synch with the rest of the carriers assuming that the carrier system in your vertical blind track is of the self-aligning variety found in higher quality vertical blinds. Spraying a light coat of silicone inside the vertical track will improve the movement of the carriers, ease the operation of the product and improve the quietness of the traversing operation.

One more thing often overlooked is the proper installation of the cord pulley to the wall surface. When the cord pulley is properly installed and the correct amount of tension is put on the pull cord, the carrier system will operate efficiently and much more smoothly.

Regardless of the product, there is no substitute for proper and regularly scheduled maintenance as this will maintain the smooth and safe operation of all products especially those products with which we interact on daily basis. This fact applies to vertical blinds regardless of what is said during the sales/purchase process. If your vertical blinds look old and worn, go forward and replace them with new ones bringing a bright and shiny look to that room and thus rewarding yourself with the pleasure and enjoyment that every room in your home should bring to you every day!
